Passive (diffusive) samplers provide a simple, reliable, and economical method for air sampling. Available for personal and area sampling, these small, lightweight samplers include passive badges, formaldehyde samplers, Passive Bubblers and color dosimeter (diffusion) tubes. Choose the sampler that fits your sampling application.

Validation for compliance sampling.
Due to their design, passive (diffusive) samplers are subject to factors such as face velocity and reverse diffusion not associated with active sorbent sampling. In addition, passive samplers do not have a back-up section, therefore, they require extensive testing to ensure sample validity. Passive samplers are validated to different protocols; Air Quality Research and OSHA have tested the SKC Personal Formaldehyde Samplers and the Mercury Passive Sampler to in-house validation protocols.

575/579 Series Passive Sampler Validation
For compliance sampling, it is recommended that only passive samplers with full or bi-level validation be used. SKC 575 Series Passive Samplers for organic vapors have been validated according to the very rigorous NIOSH testing protocol   1. NIOSH validation protocols includes these four levels:

Full
All NIOSH Partial Validation protocol and factorial study including interfering compounds, passed. This is the most rigorous test possible and includes all parameters that can affect sampling accuracy (formerly referred to as Level 5).

Bi-Level
A key member of an homologous series has passed Full and all others passed Partial. The validity of this has been shown by Guild et. al.   2 (formerly referred to as Level 5B).

Partial
Passive monitor has passed NIOSH protocol requirements for: sampling rate, desorption efficiency, humidity effects, reverse diffusion, and storage stability test for reactive compounds. Partial validations are not recommended for compliance sampling.

Calculated
Uptake rate that is calculated from the physical properties of the analyte and geometry of the sampler. Calculated rates are not based upon direct laboratory testing of the analyte with the sampler. Calculated validations are not recommended for compliance sampling.
