TO-Can Canisters
TO-Can Canisters are specifically designed for sampling compounds according
to U.S. EPA methods TO-14A and TO-15, which regulate the collection, storage,
and analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using treated air sampling
canisters.
- Electropolished interior; proprietary process (SUMMA equivalent)
- Interior cleaned extensively with ultrasonic method
- Metal-to-metal diaphragm valve improves canister performance
- Meet the holding time criteria for EPA methods TO-14A and TO-15
- Recommended for bromoform and select brominated compounds
- Use with Stainless Steel Passive Kit for optimal air sampling
of TO-14A and TO-15 compounds
SilcoCan Canisters
Low concentration and high reactivity make collection and measurement of low-level
sulfur VOCs in the atmosphere difficult. While electropolished TO-Can Canisters
are ideal for storing VOCs in ambient air, sulfur VOCs react with the canister's
metal interior making TO-Cans unsuitable for collecting and storing these types
of compounds. SilcoCan Canisters have a coated interior surface that eliminates
reactivity to sulfur VOCs.
- Silcosteel-treated interior (fused silica) for increased storage stability
of active polar or low-level sulfur VOCs
- Tough bonded interior will not crack from harsh handling in the field
or during transport
- Extensively cleaned interior
- Ideal for the collection and storage of low-level sulfur VOCs
- Use with Silcosteel Passive Kit for a completely passive sample path
Using TO-Can and SilcoCan Canisters
Ensure canister is certified clean and evacuated. TO-Can Canisters and SilcoCan
Canisters are shipped precleaned. Attach canister to the appropriate sampling
train to regulate sampling rate and time. Ship canister with sample to a laboratory
for analysis and cleaning.
Using Canisters with a Pressure Gauge
To confirm vacuum or pressure inside the canister during sampling, use a high-quality
gauge on the canister. The optional vacuum/pressure gauge continuously monitors
and accurately measures pressure inside the canister from 30 inches Hg to 60
psig. Both TO-Can Canisters and SilcoCan Canisters are available with a gauge.
Applications for Canisters
- Ambient air sampling
- Indoor air investigations
- Fenceline monitoring
- EPA TO-14A and TO-15 compounds (TO-Can)
- Low-level sulfur VOCs (SilcoCan)
- Fugitive emissions
- Verifying cylinder gas purity
What size canister do I use?
Choice of canister size is based on the concentration of the compound in the
sample, sampling time, flow rate, and the sample volume required for the sampling
period.

Canisters and Passive Kits TO-Can and SilcoCan Canisters require a Passive
Kit to control airflow rate. Passive Kits contain all the necessary sampling
hardware including a flow controller, critical orifice, vacuum gauge, frit,
and sampling inlet. Available in a variety of flow ranges, SKC recommends
using the Stainless Steel Passive Kit with the TO-Can Canister and the Silcosteel
Passive Kit with the SilcoCan Canister. Simply choose your canister and the
appropriate Passive Kit. Canisters are not included with Passive Kits.

Sample Collection with Canisters
TO-Can and SilcoCan Canisters are shipped precleaned. Ensure canister is certified
clean and evacuated (
see Tech Tip below). Simply attach a canister to the appropriate
flow controller and critical orifice to regulate flow rate and sample duration.
Once sampling is completed, ship the canister to a laboratory for analysis and
subsequent cleaning.
After each sample is analyzed, canisters should be cleaned, certified clean,
and pre-evacuated by a qualified laboratory before they are sent back into the
field for further sampling.
