A typical filter will have a rough side and a shiny side. The shiny side is easier to read under a microscope, therefore, expose the shiny side to the air for microscopic analysis. The rough side holds dust more effectively; expose the rough side for gravimetric analysis.

Filter pore size ratings are based on liquid filtration ratings. Filters will retain much smaller particles from air (e.g. a 0.8-µm liquid rated filter will retain > 50% of particles as small as 0.08 µm).

* PRODUCT NOTE ON POLYCARBONATE-BASED FILTERS 25 JANUARY 2006
The manufacturer of polycarbonate filter materials has reported to SKC that it has changed the base material. The previous material is discontinued and no longer available. TEM microscopists will note a visible change in the new material.

All polycarbonate-based filters will now have two distinct sides: one shiny and one rough. The difference is amplified when the filter surface is viewed under high magnification such as that used in electron microscopy. See the following guideline for use:

Position the filter in the cassette so that the shiny side collects the contaminant. The shiny side is the smoothest and provides a very flat surface amenable to microscopic analysis. The rough side would not be appropriate for microscopy as many particles would be out of the microscope's focal plane.
